It’s summertime, and you’re outside more. The days are long, and the sun is shining. Surely vitamin D deficiency isn’t something you need to worry about right now.

Not necessarily.

Vitamin D has earned the nickname the “sunshine vitamin” because our bodies can produce it when our skin is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from sunlight. But vitamin D is far more interesting than its sunny nickname suggests.

In fact, vitamin D behaves more like a hormone than a typical vitamin. It plays an important role in calcium absorption and bone health, supports normal muscle function, and interacts with the immune system. Researchers continue to investigate its potential relationship to many other aspects of health and aging.

Vitamin D has even been called a “miracle” nutrient. Authors such as Jeff T. Bowles have taken that idea much further, generating interest in the potential effects of extremely high doses of vitamin D3.

But is vitamin D really a miracle?

The answer is more nuanced.

Vitamin D is unquestionably important. But when it comes to supplementation, more is not necessarily better. Understanding your individual health, risk factors, and needs is far more valuable than simply reaching for a high-dose supplement.

Vitamin D Is Different From Most Vitamins

We usually think of vitamins as nutrients we obtain from food.

Vitamin D is unusual.

Your body can make vitamin D when sunlight reaches your skin. Vitamin D is then converted through a series of steps into a biologically active form that acts much like a hormone, interacting with receptors throughout the body.

That helps explain why vitamin D has attracted so much scientific attention.

One of vitamin D’s best-established roles is helping your body absorb calcium, which is essential for maintaining healthy bones. Severe vitamin D deficiency can lead to rickets in children and osteomalacia, or softening of the bones, in adults.

But bones are only part of the story.

Vitamin D also contributes to normal muscle function and plays a role in immune function. These connections have made vitamin D particularly interesting in conversations about healthy aging.

Vitamin D, Muscle and Staying Strong as You Age

Muscle does much more than help you look fit.

Strong muscles support balance, mobility and everyday activities. Maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important as we age because adults naturally tend to lose muscle mass and strength over time.

Vitamin D participates in normal muscle function, and significant deficiency can be associated with muscle weakness.

But there is an important distinction here.

Taking increasingly large amounts of vitamin D has not been shown to continually produce stronger muscles or better physical performance in otherwise healthy people.

Think of vitamin D as one piece of the healthy-aging puzzle.

Adequate vitamin D, sufficient protein, resistance training, good nutrition, healthy hormone balance, and regular movement all work together to support strength and function.

There isn’t one supplement that replaces the rest of the picture.

Vitamin D and Your Bones

This is where vitamin D has one of its clearest jobs.

Your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium effectively. Calcium, in turn, is one of the primary minerals your body uses to build and maintain bone.

That relationship becomes particularly important as we age.

Maintaining strong bones isn’t simply about preventing a diagnosis of osteoporosis. Strong bones and muscles work together to help keep you mobile, stable and capable of doing the things you enjoy.

And once again, vitamin D is only part of the equation.

Weight-bearing exercise, strength training, adequate nutrition, protein intake, calcium intake, hormonal health and other individual factors can all influence bone health.

That’s why looking at one vitamin in isolation rarely tells the whole story.

What About Your Immune System?

Vitamin D receptors are present on many types of immune cells, and vitamin D is involved in regulating immune responses.

This has generated tremendous interest in whether vitamin D supplementation might prevent infections, autoimmune diseases and other illnesses.

The research, however, is more complicated than some headlines suggest.

Observational studies have repeatedly found associations between low vitamin D levels and a variety of health conditions. But an association does not necessarily mean that low vitamin D caused the condition, or that taking large doses of vitamin D will prevent it.

That distinction is important.

Large randomized clinical trials have tested whether giving vitamin D supplements to generally healthy adults can prevent major diseases. The results have been far less dramatic than some of the early observational research suggested.

That doesn’t make vitamin D unimportant.

It reminds us that correcting a deficiency is very different from assuming that increasingly higher doses will create increasingly better health.

But I’m Outside All Summer. Isn’t That Enough?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Your body’s ability to produce vitamin D from sunlight varies considerably from person to person.

Factors can include your age, skin pigmentation, geographic location, season, time spent outdoors, clothing, sunscreen use, and how much skin is actually exposed.

And there is another consideration.

We don’t want to recommend excessive unprotected sun exposure simply to increase vitamin D production. Ultraviolet radiation also damages skin and increases the risk of skin cancer.

Vitamin D can also come from food.

Fatty fish such as salmon, trout, tuna and mackerel are among the better natural sources. Egg yolks contain smaller amounts, and many foods such as milk, plant milks, cereals and orange juice may be fortified with vitamin D.

For some people, supplementation may also be appropriate.

The important question isn’t simply, “Do I get enough sunshine?”

It’s whether your overall diet, lifestyle and health circumstances are supporting your needs.

Why Has Vitamin D Been Called a “Miracle”?

Vitamin D has developed an almost legendary reputation in some health and longevity circles.

One of the people who helped popularize this idea is author Jeff T. Bowles, whose book The Miraculous Results of Extremely High Doses of the Sunshine Hormone Vitamin D3 describes his personal experimentation with doses ranging from 25,000 to 100,000 IU per day.

His work helped fuel interest in the possibility that much larger doses of vitamin D might produce dramatic health benefits.

But this is where we need to separate an interesting hypothesis and personal experience from established medical evidence.

Those doses are far above conventional nutritional recommendations, and high-dose vitamin D can cause toxicity.

Vitamin D is fat-soluble. Unlike many water-soluble vitamins that the body can more readily excrete, vitamin D can accumulate.

Excessive vitamin D can cause abnormally high calcium levels in the blood, known as hypercalcemia. This can lead to symptoms and complications including nausea, weakness, excessive thirst and urination, kidney stones, kidney injury and, in severe cases, heart rhythm disturbances.

This doesn’t mean we should dismiss the scientific interest surrounding vitamin D.

It means we should respect its biological power.

Vitamin D can be important without being something we should take indiscriminately.

What Does the Research Say About Taking More?

This is one of the most interesting developments in vitamin D research.

For years, observational studies linked higher vitamin D levels with better health outcomes. That created understandable enthusiasm about supplementation.

Researchers then began testing the hypothesis in large randomized clinical trials.

The VITAL trial, one of the largest vitamin D trials conducted in the United States, included more than 25,000 adults and tested supplementation with 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 per day. The primary results did not show a significant reduction in invasive cancer or major cardiovascular events among people receiving vitamin D compared with placebo.

Additional analyses from large trials have similarly challenged the idea that giving extra vitamin D to otherwise healthy people will automatically prevent a wide range of chronic diseases.

In 2024, the Endocrine Society released updated clinical practice guidelines on vitamin D for disease prevention.

For generally healthy adults under age 75, the guideline suggests against routinely taking vitamin D above established dietary recommendations solely for disease prevention. The recommendations differ for certain populations, including adults over age 75, children and adolescents, pregnant people and adults with high-risk prediabetes.

The bigger lesson is important:

Adequate is good. More is not necessarily better.

Can You Take Too Much Vitamin D?

Yes.

And this is particularly important because vitamin D supplements are available without a prescription.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the recommended dietary allowance for most adults ages 19 to 70 is 600 IU (15 mcg) per day. For adults over 70, it is 800 IU (20 mcg) per day. These recommendations account for total daily intake, not necessarily the amount everyone needs to take as a separate supplement.

The tolerable upper intake level for adults is generally 4,000 IU per day, although physicians may prescribe different amounts for particular medical circumstances.

That is why extremely high-dose protocols should not be something you undertake simply because you read about someone’s positive experience online or in a book.

Your individual circumstances matter.

What About Vitamin D Testing?

A blood test called 25-hydroxyvitamin D, or 25(OH)D, is used to assess vitamin D status when testing is medically indicated.

Interestingly, current guidelines don’t recommend routine vitamin D screening for every healthy adult.

But that doesn’t mean testing is never useful.

A physician may have reasons to evaluate vitamin D based on an individual’s symptoms, medical history, bone health, medications, dietary intake, conditions affecting nutrient absorption, or other risk factors.

This is where personalized medicine becomes especially valuable.

Rather than starting with:

“How much vitamin D should everyone take?”

A better conversation may be:

“What does this particular patient need?”

But it’s exactly the kind of dose that underscores the article’s core point: this isn’t a number to copy from a supplement guide or a blog post and start taking on your own. It’s a number that makes sense in the context of an individualized plan, ideally with testing and follow-up to match.
