Testosterone Prescriptions for Women Are Rising. Could Therapy Help You?

Testosterone prescriptions for women are rising, and the increase is substantial. According to Reuters, the rate of women receiving testosterone prescriptions rose 146% between January 2023 and July 2026.

For women with a decline in interest in intimacy, testosterone therapy is a topic to discuss with their hormone specialist. Changes in sexual desire can affect your confidence, your relationship, and how desirable you feel. Testosterone therapy may offer a way forward.

Who might benefit from testosterone therapy? How does it help, and could it be right for you?

Testosterone Is a Woman’s Hormone, Too

Women naturally produce testosterone, and although women’s bodies produce less testosterone than men’s bodies do, it plays a role in sexual desire and has important functions throughout a woman’s body, including in muscle and bone tissues.

For many women, discussing testosterone may seem like a strange topic, but when sexual drive comes to a stop, it is worth exploring how testosterone therapy can become a part of the solution. At North Texas Vitality, we want our patients to feel comfortable bringing those questions to us.

“When I care for a woman, I care for the whole woman,” says Dr. Fliedner. “No topic is off-limits. If your desire has changed or intimacy no longer feels satisfying, I want you to feel comfortable telling me. Those conversations help us understand what you’re experiencing and how we can help.”

Who Benefits Most From Testosterone Therapy?

Testosterone therapy may benefit postmenopausal women whose persistently low sexual desire causes distress. Dr. Fliedner will assess possible contributors, including medications, stress, relationship concerns, and other health conditions, before recommending treatment.

Testosterone just might be that solution for them. According to a research review published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology in October 2019, testosterone therapy significantly improved sexual desire, arousal, pleasure, orgasm, and satisfaction in postmenopausal women, while reducing concerns and distress about their sexual health.

These are meaningful benefits. Sexual health is part of your overall health, and wanting help is reason enough to start a conversation.

Could Testosterone Improve My Energy and Mood?

Emerging research offers encouraging signs. A study of 510 perimenopausal and postmenopausal women already using hormone replacement therapy found improvements in mood, fatigue, and concentration after testosterone cream or gel was added for four months.

Overall, 47% reported improved mood. This observational study supports the possibility of benefits beyond sexual desire, although it cannot establish that testosterone alone caused the improvements, which is why Dr. Fliedner and his team take a more comprehensive approach.

Dr. Fliedner considers the whole woman. Individualized hormone care, combined with regular exercise, restorative sleep, nourishing food, and time for meditation or relaxation, creates a strong foundation for feeling better. Mindfulness practices can also help improve sleep and ease anxiety and depressive symptoms.

“At North Texas Vitality, our goal is to help you have more energy for the life you enjoy, a brighter outlook, and greater confidence in how you feel,” says Dr. Fliedner.

A consultation with Dr. Fliedner can help you explore how hormone therapy and healthy daily habits work together in your care plan.

But, Will I Become Muscle-Bound?

This is the question we get most frequently from women considering testosterone therapy. Becoming muscle-bound is not an expected effect of testosterone treatment at the appropriate doses we prescribe for women.

Treatment uses much smaller amounts than those used for men, with monitoring to keep levels within the normal female range.

If you want a stronger, more toned body, strength training builds muscle. You can work toward strength and definition without aiming for a bodybuilder’s physique.

Will I Lose Weight or Have More Energy?

If your goals include losing weight, improving energy, and feeling stronger, bring those goals to your appointment, too. The more you tell Dr. Fliedner about your goals, the better he can tailor a care plan to your needs.

Testosterone’s demonstrated treatment benefit is sexual health. It has not been shown to reliably cause weight loss or improve energy, mood, or muscle strength at recommended doses for women. Those goals call for a broader plan that addresses exercise, nutrition, sleep, and your overall health.

That is where Dr. Fliedner’s approach brings the pieces together.

Dr. Fliedner’s Approach: Feel Strong, Confident, and Sexy

Dr. Fliedner combines testosterone therapy, when appropriate, with an exercise program to help women work toward feeling lean, strong, and attractive in their bodies.

Hormone therapy addresses your individual symptoms. Exercise builds strength, improves fitness, and supports healthier body composition. If your goal is to enjoy a satisfying intimate life and a body you feel good living in, you’ve come to the right place.

The first step is to contact us to schedule an introductory appointment. We’ll discuss your overall health goals and order simple tests to assess your hormone levels. Based on your results and individual needs, Dr. Fliedner will develop a personalized treatment plan for you.

Could Testosterone Therapy Be Right for You?

Dr. Fliedner can review your symptoms, medical history, and medications, and check hormone levels when appropriate. Your experience matters alongside your bloodwork; a lab number alone does not determine who will benefit.

If treatment is appropriate, careful dosing and follow-up help assess your response, keep hormone levels within the female range, and identify unwanted effects. You will also discuss the benefits and limitations of treatment and possible side effects, including acne and increased facial or body hair.

You can enjoy intimacy again. We are here to help. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Fliedner to explore whether testosterone therapy could be right for you.
