What Are BioTe Pellets?

BioTe® pellets are a form of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) made of custom-compounded hormones and binders. The hormones are compounded in the U.S. by pharmacies that are held to strict standards. The pellets are manufactured and tested for potency, sterility, and endotoxins to ensure a high-quality pellet therapy.

These tiny, rice-sized pellets are plant-based and safe for your body because they contain bioidentical hormones, which are molecularly similar to those found within the human body. Once Dr. Fliedner inserts these hormones under the skin, they begin working immediately to help balance out your hormones.

Can Both Men and Women Use Them?

Yes, there are two major pellet therapy types: estrogen pellets and testosterone pellets.

How Estrogen Pellets Help Women

Estrogen pellets are prescribed to women to alleviate the effects of menopause. Studies have shown that estrogen is a “safe and effective tool to counteract climacteric symptoms and to prevent long-term degenerative diseases, such as osteoporotic fractures, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and possibly cognitive impairment.”

Dr. Fliedner will evaluate your health history and prescribe a custom compound of bioidentical hormones including estradiol, a form of estrogen. Estrogen pellets may relieve emotional, reproductive, and non-reproductive symptoms. Estrogen pellets are prescribed most commonly to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of aging in women.

How Testosterone Pellets Help Men

Testosterone pellet therapy helps men by improving many health conditions such as andropause, low mood, anxiousness, low sex drive, decreased bone density, and heart issues. Pellet therapy may also include the relief of symptoms caused by these conditions, as well as improving a man’s hormonal balance.

Testosterone has been shown to relieve a wide range of reproductive, emotional, and non-reproductive conditions. Some of these include low energy, sexual dysfunction, mood swings, irritability, and many others.

Most men prefer the pellet delivery method over any other form of BHRT. According to a seven-year study of delivering testosterone to men with pellet therapy, “the overall continuation rate after two insertions was 93%. The overall complication rate was less than 3%.”

The Advantages of Pellet Therapy

Since 1938, hormone replacement therapy by pellet implantation has been successful in the United States, Europe, and Australia and has been found to be superior to other methods of hormone delivery (Greenblatt49, Mishnell 41, Stanczyk 88).

The advantages of BioTe Pellets are numerous.

  • These subcutaneous pellets deliver consistent, healthy levels of hormones for three-to-five months in women and four-to-six months in men. They deliver consistent physiologic levels of hormones and avoid the fluctuations of hormone levels seen with every other method of delivery, such as pills, creams, gels, and synthetic injections. This is important for optimal health and disease prevention. See our article, BioTE for Men in North Texas, for more information.
  • BioTE pellets are custom-compounded by pharmaceutical manufacturers that are registered with the Food and Drug Administration. This extra layer of FDA compliance and oversight provides a higher level of safety for our patients.
  • Hormones delivered under the skin bypass the liver and do not increase the risk of blood clots like conventional or synthetic hormone replacement therapy.
  • Hormone replacement therapy with estradiol and testosterone implants is superior to oral and topical hormone replacement therapy for bone density. The pellets not only prevent bone loss but also actually increase bone density.

The Pellet Therapy Process

After Dr. Fliedner completes some hormone tests and prescribes a specially compounded hormone therapy, the patient returns for an in-office visit, which only takes a few minutes. He numbs the insertion site, makes a small incision, usually in the upper buttocks, inserts the hormone pellet, and places a small bandage over the insertion site.

Once inserted, the body begins the process of absorbing the hormones. Since pellets are bioidentical and contain hormones like those our body produces, the body will naturally and completely dissolve and absorb the hormones over time, leaving nothing behind.

Dr. Fliedner recommends that patients abstain from lower body exercise right after pellet insertion. Walking is fine, but strenuous activity is not recommended. Avoid bathtubs, swimming, and hot tubs. Showers are allowed. After 48 hours, normal activity may resume.

How Soon Does a Patient Feel Better?

Within 24-48 hours, many patients describe a sense of rejuvenation, while others may take a week or two before they notice changes. Diet and lifestyle play an essential role, along with hormone therapy, to feel in optimal health. Also, stress can play a major role in hormone imbalance and illness.

It can take up to six months after the first insertion for a state of hormonal balance to be achieved, and it may take a second application to feel the full effects.

The Assurance of a BioTe Certified Provider

In order to prescribe and insert BioTe pellets, a physician must undergo BioTe’s rigorous certification process. As a BioTe Certified Provider, Dr. Fliedner is trained to determine the ideal hormone pellet plan for a patient based on a consultation and extensive lab work.

Additionally, Dr. Fliedner is the only doctor in the Flower Mound and Lewisville areas who has received the distinction of being a BioTe Legacy Partner for performing over 500 NEW pellet patient procedures. You are in good hands with Dr. Fliedner.
